Catholicism

Catholicism is centered on the teachings of Jesus Christ and the belief in one God, who exists as the Holy Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Jesus Christ instituted the first Catholic Church through Peter the Apostle.

Matthew 16:18-19.

"And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

To be Catholic means to belong to the universal (or "catholic") Church, which traces its roots back to Jesus Christ and the apostles. It involves embracing the teachings of the Catholic Church and participating in its sacramental and communal life. Here are some key aspects of what it means to be Catholic:

  • Faith in God: Catholics believe in one God who exists as the Holy Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Central to Catholic faith is belief in Jesus Christ as the Son of God, the Savior, and Redeemer of humanity.

  • Sacraments: Catholics participate in the seven sacraments, which are sacred rites believed to impart God's grace. These include Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation, Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, Matrimony, and Holy Orders.

  • Scripture and Tradition: Catholicism values both the Bible and Sacred Tradition. The Church views its teachings as guided by the Holy Spirit and rooted in the Word of God.

  • Living a Moral Life: Catholics strive to follow the teachings of Jesus by living virtuous lives, caring for others, and acting with compassion and justice. The Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes serve as moral guidelines.

  • Community and Worship: Being Catholic means being part of a global faith community united in worship, particularly through the Mass, which is the central act of Catholic worship.

  • Devotion to Mary and the Saints: Catholics honor the Virgin Mary as the Mother of God and seek her intercession, as well as the intercession of saints, who are viewed as examples of holiness.

  • Commitment to Social Justice: The Catholic Church emphasizes the dignity of every human being and works to promote justice, peace, and care for the marginalized.

Catholicism is not just a set of beliefs—it’s a way of life, centered on a relationship with God and lived out in faith, love, and service.
